Moment in Time

In a moment in time three voices sing loudly and courageously.
They resonate with the space, its walls buzz with a vibrating presence.
No other body witnesses this genuine sounding, yet they don't want to mourn the amnesiac past, yet.

Captured on tape, material traces of that present are preserved, for posterity to experience. Knowing that memory works mysteriously, they remember their thoughtful togetherness and compose its reconstitution. Again and again, in continuously changing loops, their voices sing without exhaustion.

Their bodies are elsewhere, creating memories informed by the past and activated by the sense of being in the now.

A site-specific, tape loop installation created in collaboration with Niek van den Driesschen from Far Out Sound Studio, Rotterdam. Exhibited during Wild Summer of Art 2025.

Sound snippet of tape loops

Our voices were recorded by Niek in the cathedral of Brutus, directly onto reel-to-reel tape, and then spatially composed into an immersive installation. An ever-changing composition of voice, degrading over time. Three long tape loops flow through three tape machines and a number of hooks and chains positioned in the dimly-lit space

The atmosphere of the sound piece transports the listener into a past not yet forgotten. Our loud and courageous singing echoes on, in an attempt to preserve the memory, to remember. The fragility of the material itself, prone to deterioration, calls for a constant taking care of its delicate construction and yet, our voices sing without exhaustion!
